My
approach to photography is that of a dedicated hobbyist. I enjoy it immensely
as a recreation and creative outlet, and for that reason have never been
able to view it frightfully seriously! This is not to say I do not always
do the best I can, but perhaps an excuse for the sometimes flippant images
I produce.
I took my
first 'snap' in the thirties with a wooden pinhole camera I made myself,
loaded with a glass plate I coated myself, subsequently developed in the
cellar in a pie dish with baths I made up myself from chemicals purchased
from the local chemist. Printed on the garden lawn on POP (printing out
paper) and in the fulness of time put through a home-made enlarger constructed
from biscuit tins, opal glass and an old folding bellows camera.
Since those
early days I think I have used almost every format from whole-plate down
to half-frame 35mm in a variety of cameras, and have experimented with
most photographic processes and techniques over the past sixty years or
so. My photographic interests embrace most subjects as they come within
reach, but I especially enjoy 'creative' work and the macro and micro
photography of small creatures. I also enjoy sharing my images with the
wider non-photographic public through the medium of lectures and audio-visual
slide shows.
Although
the images I produce are primarily for my own satisfaction, I have for
many years submitted to many Salons and Exhibitions both in the UK and
several European countries, also the USA and have a modest record of acceptances
and awards - the most satisfying of which are the three London Salon Medals
gained. I was elected a Member of the London Salon in 1999. I am an Associate
Member of the Royal Photographic Society, achieving my ARPS in 1986. In
1991 I gained Star Exhibitor status in the Photographic Society of America.
I have three Crowns for 100 acceptances in the British Photographic Exhibitions
circuit. I am also a member of the Brighton and Hove Camera Club.
The advent
of Digital Imaging has given my photography a new fillip, and I now work
exclusively in this medium apart from obtaining original images in 35mm
stock, a state of affairs which is likely to persist until really good
digital cameras come within my means.
I hope you
enjoy my site and find my pics worthy of your attention. They are a mixture
of digital and traditional and do, I hope, reflect my interest in most
of the art and craft of imaging. |
